Call for Application: Consultancy Services in Mozambique

  1. Background

The Competitive Cashew initiative (ComCashew) aims to strengthen the competitiveness of African Cashew processors to reduce poverty amongst small-scale farmers in its project countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mozambique and Sierra-Leonne. The African Cashew Alliance (ACA) an implementing partner of ComCashew has been mandated to deliver activities of ComCashew. ACA is therefore seeking for Consultant to provide training services in Nampula Province of Mozambique to realize the objective of “Improvement of processing and employee environment to effectively alleviate the economic hardships and health conditions of factories and workers put at risk by the COVID 19 pandemic”.

 

  1. Specific Objective, Results and Outputs

 

Support and collect learnings from the rehabilitation process in 18 cashew demonstration plots aiming at increasing the yield potential from low-yielding trees. Information about the adaption rate in the nearby communities, where 270 neighboring farmers have been exposed to different rehabilitation techniques.

 

Expected Results

  • Increased yield potential in 18 rehabilitated cashew demo-plots, average size 0,5 ha. and estimated average yield of 500 kg/ha in 2020.
  • 16 of the 18 owners of demo-plots with forecast for the harvest 2020 and estimated cost/benefits records and the ability to compare their result with previous years.
  • Evaluation of the cashew rehabilitation techniques by the involved 288 farmers
  • 80% of trained farmers with projected cashew improvement actions for 2021 

Outputs

  • 18 rehabilitated demonstration plots presenting at least 4 different rehabilitation techniques and visible yield improvements
  • 85% of 270 trained neighboring cashew farmers using at least 2 cashew rehabilitation techniques
  • 18 farmers selected by the local groups trained to perform the rehabilitation techniques as a service provision

Consultancy Activities/ tasks:

 

The consultant is to provide the follows activities:

 

  • Technical assistance and training in the field improvements: Top-working and maintenance of top-worked trees and rejuvenated cashew trees, where possible due to the season eliminate overlapping and unproductive trees, control of diseases and pests
  • Monitor farm records from the 18 owners of the demonstration plots, assist in forecasting the year balance. Analyze and compare with the results with available data
  • Train 18 local service provider capacities in rehabilitation techniques, identification, and control of diseases & pests to secure continuation of cashew improvements beyond the project
  • Identify local best performing cashew trees in terms of quantity and quality. These trees can supply material for top-working and cashew replication.    
  • Organize field visits, with participation of the Cashew Institute and the department of Agriculture
  • Evaluation of best practices in the 18 groups, compile, and share information

 

  1. Duration

The Commencement date for this TOR is 31stAugust 2020, with a duration of ten (8) weeks. All activities including final reporting are to be concluded on or before 31st October 2020.

  1. Reporting

The successful firm or consultant will be required to submit monthly reports on the state of implementation, to the African Cashew Alliance (ACA).

  1. Quotation

Interested Consultants or Firms are to submit a detailed quotation of this Terms of Reference.

 

  1. Application Process

Interested suppliers should:

  1. The consultant or firm must be based in Mozambique and must have at least five (5) years prior experience in delivering similar interventions in the cashew sector in Mozambique.
  2. Respond to this TOR, stating their capacity, to deliver the consultancy services.
  3. Submit a detailed Quotation for the consultancy services.
  4. Submit all applications to the African Cashew Alliance (ACA) through  email: relief@africancashewalliance.com
